Breeds of Cavies

There are 13 officially showable breeds of cavy according to ARBA. However there are a few other breeds that exist but are not showable. The only two breeds that I will list here that are not showable are the hairless. A breed is the coat type of a cavy in the US, not the color

Abyssinian

An Abyssinian cavy has at least 10 rosettes in a specific placement. They occasionally may have more, if they do not interfere with the placement of the main 10. "Bad hair day" cavies.

Abyssinian Satin

The same as the Abyssinian with a satin sheen to the coat because of hollow hair shafts.

American

The American cavy is the smooth coated guinea pig. Their hair is short and grows straight back from their face.

American Satin

The same as the American, but with a satin sheen to their coat.

Coronet

A longhaired cavy whose hair grows straight back from their head, but with a coronet in the middle of their head. The "coronet" is a rosette on their forehead.

Peruvian

Another longhaired breed of cavy, probably the most common. The Peruvian's hair grows up and over their head from their rump forward. A well groomed, show Peruvian looks like a walking mop when their grooming wraps are out.
Peruvian Satin
The same as a Peruvian, but with a satin sheen to it's coat.
Silkie
A longhaired equivilant of an American. The hair grows straight back from the head.
Silkie Satin

The same as a silkie, but with a satin sheen to the hair.

Teddy

A shorthaired cavy with frizzy hair that should stick straight out from their body, They have a similar appearance to the Rex, but are different genetically.

Teddy Satin

The same as a teddy, but with a satin sheen to their coat.

Texel

A longhaired breed of cavy with long ringlets that grow straight back from their head.

White Crested
A self or non white colored American with a white crest, or rosette on it's forehead.

Hairless Breeds

Skinny

The skinny is not a completely hairless breed. They are born with all the hair they will ever have, usually on their head and feet, sometimes with a bit of peach fuzz on the rest of their body. Skinny carriers look like poorly coated Teddies.
Baldwin
The Baldwin is a completely bald breed. They are born with hair and then loose it soon after birth.
